Agriculture and rural development play a very important role in Vietnam economy. Renovation in agriculture has facilitated the inception of economic reform process in Vietnam. Over the last 10 years, agricultural growth rate has reached rapid and stable level of averagely 4.5%/year. Today, agriculture has contributed 30% to total export turnover and 25% to total GDP. The sector has provided improved living conditions for the majority of 76% of population living in rural areas. In 1997/1998 period, agriculture, forestry and fishery sector created employments for 66% of national labor force. The sector is considered the foundation for economic development and the implementation of national industrialization and modernization.

Transforming from extensive development to intensive one, information is a useful tool to improved the sector towards developing a strong and effective commercial sector with high competitiveness.

Supporting information activity of the sector, the website Agroviet is established to build a bridge between producers, traders and decision makers on the one hand and customers, investors and domestic and international donors on the other, the sector's website is established. This website provides information on Vietnam agriculture and rural development sector, promotes trade of agricultural and forestry products. Agroviet is now serving the target of offering market information, seeking trade partners and gradually exchanging products through E-commerce. In addition, Agroviet also links producers and traders in the country to information on science and technology, rural development and policies, bringing them closer to management mechanism and leadership. The sections "The world market" and "Link" are not available in English section of the web. English version only mentions information on Vietnam agricultural situation and Vietnam enterprises.

* Database: Thematic database is now established and gradually put into the website introducing such professional topics as poverty alleviation and hunger elimination, socio-economic situation in rural areas, domestic market prices, agricultural production and etc. The database is available in the website under various forms of figures, text and GIS (geographic information system) and is provided to clients as service.

Agroviet is connected to Internet through the line 64; email can be used free of charge for clients to contact with international partners.
